(или магнетит. руды, осн. рудный минерал к-рых — магнетит (Fe3O4), содерж. 50—60 % Fe; шпатовые Ж. или сидерит, руды, сост. из карбоната железа, сидерита (FeCO3), содерж. 30—35 % Fe. Кроме того, различают силикат, железные руды, сост. из железистых хлоритов, обычно сопровожд. гидрооксидами Fe, иногда сидеритом с 25—40 % Fe, а тж. железистые кварциты — бедные и средние (12-36 % Fe).
Большая часть ж. используется для выплавки чугунов, сталей, ферросплавов. В относит. неб. кол-вах служат природными красками (охры) и утяжелителями буровых глинистых р-ров.
